CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom-Mobile gaming will be gangbusters in Western Europe, according to a new study, increasing from $228 million last year to nearly $3.4 billion in 2008.
The total gaming market will account for 19 percent of the total market for mobile content and entertainment services in 2008, according to a new study from Analysys. The firm said the vast majority of the gaming market will be driven by downloadable applications, mainly working over the Java application download standard.
“Java handsets have become more widely available over the last 18 months, and mass-market interest in mobile gaming has grown strongly as a result,” said the report’s lead author, Rachael Beale. “Users are swapping Snake for arcade simulations and film tie-ins, and the release of new devices optimized for gaming, like Nokia’s N-Gage, is likely to encourage take-up further.”
