Calif. town to have citywide hot zone

SAN JOSE, Calif.-Citizens of the City of Cerritos, Calif., will ring in the new year in a Wi-Fi city, according to a recent announcement from Pronto Networks and Aiirnet Wireless, which plan to build and deploy a Wi-Fi hot zone to blanket the town.

The network will use Wi-Fi mesh technology and fixed wireless backhaul and will use Pronto’s Operations Support System for authentication, billing, revenue distribution and customer support. The network will be available to the city’s 50,000 residents, businesses and city workers, and for citywide public-safety initiatives.

So far, 1.5 square miles of Cerritos’ hot zone has been deployed and the full service, covering 8.6 miles, is scheduled to go live Jan. 1, 2004. Initially, coverage will be offered only outdoors, with indoor coverage expected to be added later.
