TEMPE, Ariz.-New research shows that in wireless, it’s out with the old and in with the new.
According to a study from research and consulting firm Forward Concepts, handsets running older wireless technologies like TDMA and even GSM are scheduled for a decline this year, while sales of newer technologies like EDGE, W-CDMA and EV-DO are on the rise. The firm predicts shipments of TDMA handsets will fall 30 percent this year, while GSM sales will drop by 23 percent. On the other hand, sales of EDGE handsets will increase by 51 percent to 60 million units, while W-CDMA handset sales will increase 165 percent to 45 million units. The firm predicts sales of EV-DO devices will increase 65 percent to 16 million units this year.
Further, the firm predicts Texas Instruments Inc. will remain the winner in the chip market for handsets with sales of second- and third-generation products. Forward Concepts said Qualcomm Inc. will continue its domination of the CDMA realm.
The findings are outlined in the firm’s “Global Cellular Handset & Chip Markets” report.
