MUNICH, Germany-Siemens AG said its Music2You music download technology is set to launch through T-Mobile International. The two companies recently signed a framework agreement, making Music2You the preferred solution for all T-Mobile International subsidiaries worldwide.
T-Mobile Germany is to offer the Siemens solution as “MobileJukebox,” a combined wireless and wireline solution for downloading music to both mobile handsets and computers. T-Online, a German Internet site offering digital music and also owned by T-Mobile International’s parent company Deutsche Telekom AG, is already making use of Siemens’ Musicload solution.
Music2You lets users preview music on a mobile handset and then gives them the option to purchase and download the title in its entirety over the wireless network. Once tracks are purchased, they also can be downloaded to a computer, from which they can be burned to CDs or played on MP3 players.
Siemens said the selection of music offerings comprises hundreds of thousands of titles from a variety of major labels and that the cost of the downloads is charged to the user’s wireless bill.
“Music downloads are one of the most interesting applications for GPRS, EDGE and W-CDMA networks, as they provide the necessary download speeds,” said Guilio Panzera, Music2You project leader at Siemens Switzerland. “The market for digital music is going to expand, and the requirements placed upon the mobile networks will continue to rise.”
