RESTON, Va.-Wireless Matrix Corp., which provides enterprise wireless data services, extended its contract with satellite provider Mobile Satellite Ventures through January 2008.
Wireless Matrix uses satellite services as part of its wide area wireless communications network, which also makes use of terrestrial wireless services to provide seamless communications for its customers. Wireless Matrix sells the services to businesses.
Wireless Matrix and MSV have been partners since 1997.
MSV earlier this month tapped Boeing to build three next-generation L-band satellites to form the backbone of the company’s commercial telecommunications network based on its Ancillary Terrestrial Component technology, which combines satellite and terrestrial wireless technologies. The satellites are expected to launch in 2009 and 2010.
MSV now directly competes with Globalstar L.L.C., which just last week was authorized by the Federal Communications Commission to operate land-based cell phone networks to supplement its mobile satellite services. MSV received ATC approval in 2004.
