SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. tapped the architect of its BREW business to head the commercial launch of its new mobile TV effort, MediaFlo USA Inc. Qualcomm’s Gina Lombardi was appointed president of the company’s MediaFlo subsidiary. Lombardi was previously senior vice president of marketing, product management and developer relations at Qualcomm Internet Services, where she oversaw the development of the company’s BREW application download business.
“I’m truly honored and thrilled to join the MediaFlo USA team during such an exciting time for the wireless industry,” Lombardi said. “MediaFlo is the best technology for getting affordable, compelling mobile multimedia services into the hands of wireless subscribers. Along with our partners, MediaFlo USA will lead the way towards a mobile media delivery market that benefits all of our partners and is compelling for consumers.”
Qualcomm’s MediaFlo subsidiary is investing almost a billion dollars in building a nationwide network to broadcast TV to wireless users. The company plans to commercially launch several markets sometime this year. Verizon Wireless has said it plans to sell mobile TV services using the MediaFlo network.
Richard Sulpizio, a Qualcomm director, has served as interim president of MediaFlo USA since January 2005.
