Indian operators hit with spectrum penalties

India’s Department of Telecommunications has levied fines against three wireless operators for not meeting deadlines for the launch of new services on fresh spectrum.
The agency requires mobile operators to launch services within a year of receiving new spectrum licenses, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Etisalat DB Telecom Pvt. Ltd, Loop Telecom Pvt. Ltd. and Unitech Wireless Ltd. all failed to meet some recent deadlines and subsequently paid penalties “under protest.”
Etislat DB Telecom paid $2.2 million, Loop Telecom paid about $612,000 and Unitech declined to tell the Journal how much it paid.
