Daily newspaper uses SMS for Chevrolet contest

DALLAS-Quick, a daily news and entertainment tabloid produced by The Dallas Morning News, partnered with Chevrolet on a short message service contest aimed at reaching younger adults.

The contest, which ran from Feb. 16 through March 2, garnered 5,541 entries to win a 2005 Chevy Cobalt. Readers were asked to text message the word Cobalt from their wireless phones to a promotional number for chances to win.

In all, 3,568 entries were received via text messaging, 1,943 online and 30 paper entries.

“Our young, professional readers lead extremely busy lives,” said Dave Schmall, Quick general manager. “We must be able to reach our audience while they are on the go. Finding new and innovative ways to communicate with them is critical. This contest reaffirmed our strategy and its impact, since 64 percent of the entrants opted to communicate with us through text messaging.”

Daryl Miller, 28, was randomly selected as the winner. Quick plans additional text-messaging entry campaigns this year.
