CEASA to develop early warning system

GENEVA-The Cellular Emergency Alert Systems Association said it formed a global working group focused on development of early warning networks that use cell broadcast technology to alert citizens to impending disasters.

The effort initially will focus on dissemination of seismic event warnings generated by a proposed United Nations tsunami warning program, with hopes that the instant alert capability will later be expanded to cover other disasters. Under the proposed public-private initiative, the working group members will provide tsunami-prone nations with the technology upgrades required for managing their cellular networks’ resident broadcast messaging capability as well as a secure data link to the UN’s proposed seismic monitoring center, according to CEASa.

Members include SAIC, Verisign, LogicaCMG, CellAlert Systems, Microsoft Map Point and the Cell Broadcast Forum. Recommendations will be forwarded to the various international regulatory and standards agencies.
