CANNES, France-Following through on its fourth-quarter promises, Openwave Systems Inc. announced a deal with Qualcomm Inc. to include Openwave’s WAP browser on Qualcomm’s MSM chips.
“This phone solution streamlines development efforts and accelerates time to market to significantly reduce the costs of 3G device development,” said Luis Pineda, a senior vice president for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.
Openwave had previously promised a deal with a chipmaker, a move that marks an expansion of the company’s addressable customer base beyond just handset manufacturers.
In a similar move, Access Co. Ltd. announced its browser has been ported to Texas Instruments Inc.’s OMAP2420 chipset. Access provides the browser technology for a variety of European and Japanese i-mode phones.
In other Openwave news, the company announced China Unicom purchased an additional 6.4 million Openwave Mobile Access Gateway licenses and upgraded its entire subscriber base to MAG version 6. Separately, Openwave released its new Mobile Device Manager, which the company said includes technologies for accessing, adding and managing data services on wireless devices. Such over-the-air updating technology has become a major area of interest in the wireless handset market.
