Virtualization does not change only the way mobile operators build their networks. It changes also the way the monitor and assess performance and QoE. When function and hardware are no longer tied, a hardware probe in a network element is no longer effective – probes have to be virtualized as well and provide intelligence on how the end-to-end network managed the traffic load and what is the impact on subscriber experience.

“The concept of end-to-end visibility now becomes real virtualization, because every element of this end-to-end service is being virtualized. You have to find where the instance of the service delivery is, follow it, and try to monitor and get the data, so that you will be able to stitch together all the information about the service and provide the endtoend visibility,” says Sameh.

Monitoring of performance and QoE in a virtualized networks has to be in real-time. “We’re predicting a tighter real-time interaction between monitoring systems with functions like policy systems, so that the network itself could make the appropriate adjustments in real time to accommodate changes in network demand. And this ultimately leads to the introduction and monetization of further services.”

In our conversation with Sameh Yamany and Rob Marson we explore the implications of virtualization on how mobile operators monitor their networks in real time, and how this gives them a deeper real- time intelligence in the network that can be used to improve network efficiency and QoE.

This conversation will be included in the Senza Fili report “The emergence of the NFV ecosystem: Laying the foundation for a new way to run mobile networks” that will be published on October 6, 2014.
