LUXEMBOURG-Device manufacturer i-mate will produce handsets preloaded with Skype software, enabling users to make VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) calls out-of-the-box, the companies announced Thursday.
The first dual-mode wireless phones to come with the Skype offering, the i-mate PDA2 and PDA2K handsets will make their debut at 3GSM Congress next week. The GSM/GPRS Wi-Fi handsets allow users to make free VoIP calls from Wi-Fi hotspots.
“In line with our continuing commitment to provide customers with the value-added benefits they require, this partnership with Skype is a natural way for i-mate to deliver to its customers a fully functional global VoIP service,” said Jim Morrison, i-mate’s chief executive officer.
