Reuters is reporting that Google wants the next version of Android to operate on vehicles, and that users will not need a smartphone in order to use it.
Android M is the working name for the next version of Android, expected to roll out in late 2015 or in 2016. Right now Google is still waiting for cars with in-vehicle screens that can display Android apps. Those models are expected next year, and will work with some current Android smartphones.
The connected car is shaping up as the newest battleground for over-the-top players like Google and the wireless carriers. AT&T, in particular, has made the connected car a strategic priority and has already announced deals with four automakers, according to RCR’s Claudia Bacco. She reports that this year AT&T has signed deals with Chevrolet, Audi, Tesla and Volvo.
