Atlanta, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte in the mix
Google Fiber is poised to expand to four more U.S. markets, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with company plans.
Google already offers the Gigabit fiber optic-based Internet service in Austin, Texas; Provo, Utah; and Kansas City, Mo.
Atlanta, Nashville, Tenn. and Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, N.C., are tapped for the next wave of fiber network build outs, according to reports.
As usual, Google representatives have remained tight-lipped regarding expansion of Fiber.
But the company has invited media outlets and others to events in Atlanta and Nashville today, followed on Wednesday with events in Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham.
The Austin service was rolled out amid considerable fanfare complete with customized T-shirts and the unveiling of the high-tech Fiber Space in the heart of downtown.
RCR Wireless News had the opportunity to tour Fiber Space.
Google Fiber provides data speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps, which is 100 times faster than the vast majority of broadband connections.
The service also includes HD television, digital video recording services and access to cloud-based data storage.
Google’s published expansion plans pegged 34 potential cities in nine metropolitan areas; included on that list are all of the deployments rumored for this week.
Also possible spots mentioned by Google are around Portland, Ore.; San Jose, Calif.; Salt Lake City;Â Phoenix; and San Antonio.
