DENVER-A technology licensing firm said Thursday it had reached a tentative agreement with five companies on the terms of a joint patent portfolio to protect digital film and music on mobile phones against piracy.
MPEG LA said the companies had pooled essential anti-piracy patents for use of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) specification. The patent license, which is said to be the first in a series of DRM technology initiatives arising out of MPEG LA’s DRM Reference Model, will enable mobile-phone makers to protect songs, software and other digital content against forwarding or peer-to-peer file transfers.
“This breakthrough in providing efficient access to key DRM patents would not be possible without the hard work and foresight of these DRM market leaders,” said Baryn S. Futa, MPEG LA’s chief executive officer. “Everyone in the product chain-content owners, service providers, device manufacturers and especially consumers-will benefit from this growth opportunity.”
