Agreements tap into growing NFV, SDN services
Cisco Systems touted a number of telecom carrier wins connected with its virtualization and cloud services, including deals with Deutsche Telekom and Telecom Italia.
Cisco reported that DT had launched its first cloud virtual private network service targeting small and midsized businesses based on DT’s pan-European IP network. The platform uses a self-service online portal to provide customers access to managing their services, which Cisco said includes branch, site-to-site and remote access encrypted VPNs, and firewall and Web security, all offered as a cloud-managed IT solution on a monthly subscription basis.
The platform uses Cisco’s virtual security appliances and DT’s OpenStack-based solutions. Cisco added that its virtualized managed services solution uses network function virtualization, software-defined networking and multivendor orchestration and provisioning to enable telecom operators to “save up to 78% in operational costs, deliver a 200% return on investment over 5 years and decrease new managed service start-up time from months to less than 48 hours, compared with past approaches.”
DT said it launched the offering this month through subsidiaries in Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia.
Cisco’s deal with Telecom Italia calls for the carrier to offer Cisco’s managed business services platform in Italy as part of Telecom Italia’s local area network management offering. The platform uses technology from Cisco’s Meraki cloud-controlled Wi-Fi routing and security.
Telecom Italia also said it plans to work with Cisco on developing cloud managed services based on Cisco’s virtualization and orchestration software platform to support real-time automation and provisioning services across compute, storage and network functions. Telecom Italia currently works with Cisco on delivering cloud and managed services, including infrastructure-as-a-service and unified collaboration within Telecom Italia’s Nuvola Italiana brand.
Cisco recently joined the Open Network Lab’s open-source SDN Open Network Operating System platform, which is looking to accelerate SDN adoption.
