Small cell is expected to surge in 2015
HetNet Happenings: Episode 8–Small cell is a hot topic in the telecom industry with market analysts tallying some 10.2 million units shipped with that figure poised to double, or even triple, in 2015.
RCR Wireless News Managing Editor Sean Kinney discussed with Kelly Hill, an RCR editor specializing in small cell, test and measurement and other technologies, current trends in the small cell sector along with small cell-related news items.
Hill recently conducted a webinar focused on small cell and discusses trends including the urban RF environment, evolution of the small cell market and the technical maturation presented by carrier aggregation, LTE-Advanced and other emerging technologies.
Hill comments on Ericsson’s LAA (licensed assisted access) small cell, which operates in unlicensed spectrum traditionally occupied by Wi-Fi signals.
Also addressed is Nokia and SK Telecom’s commercialization of a small cell equipped with enhanced inter-cell interference coordination, eICIC.
Looking past current 4G LTE mobile networks, Hill and Kinney discussed how small cells figure into the as-yet undefined 5G standard.
