Dead devices in early AT&T Galaxy S6 shipments reported

Good news for those who preordered the Samsung Galaxy S6. Sprint, T-Mobile US and AT&T Mobility are reportedly shipping orders for the new smartphone ahead of the April 10 release date.

Customers have already received the phones up to six days early. But it’s not all good news. Some customers are reporting issues with dead devices in early AT&T Mobility Galaxy S6 shipments, claiming the phones don’t turn on immediately out of the box.

The box may be to blame. PhoneArena, a device review website, reported via Tech Times that AT&T employees sent them a screenshot of a memo warning employees of a “packaging procedure” issue that could cause the devices to not turn on immediately out of the box.

AT&T Mobility said that there is a simple solution to the problem. They claim that the boxes are designed in such a way that the phones may turn on inside the box, so they may arrive with a dead battery.

“Samsung has identified a packaging procedure that may cause the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge to be powered on in the box during shipping,” AT&T said. “This can cause the device’s battery to drain before it reaches the customer.”

AT&T Mobility also said the phones should work after they are properly charged.

There have been no reports so far of similar issues with Sprint and T-Mobile US, but AT&T Mobility said it was Samsung that made them aware of the packaging issue, which means it may not be isolated to one carrier.

Sprint announced on Twitter that it will start shipping the Galaxy S6 on April 6. As of now, it appears that the Galaxy S6 Edge will not be included in the early shipments.

T-Mobile US is also being reported to be shipping early as well. Customers who opted for a Saturday delivery received their phones as early as April 4. Those who selected overnight shipping are expected to get their phones on April 6.

T-Mobile US customers who place their preorders today can elect to get them April 7 or 8.

The early delivery of the T-Mobile US phones is confirmed by photos posted on XDA, an Android developers’ forum.

As of now, Verizon Wireless is the only major carrier to not announce intentions to release the Galaxy S6 devices early.

Preorders of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are expected to be twice as many as the preorders for the Galaxy S5 that was released last year.

The two new Samsung devices boast features that include a metallic design, QHD display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Chipset. Samsung debuted the Galaxy S6 in early March in conjunction with Mobile World Congress 2015. See the video of the release below.
