Sprint targets tablet promotion to spur growth

Sprint offers service discount, free LG G Pad

Sprint is looking to encourage the uptake of tablet devices, announcing a deep discount on tablet data plans connected with a smartphone rate plan.

Sprint said customers can receive a 50% discount on monthly tablet data plans for up to six months when activating a new handset or upgrading an existing handset and activating a tablet. The discount is available on the 100-megabyte tablet data plan, which brings the price down to $5 per month, or 1-gigabyte tablet data plan, which brings the price to $7.50 per month.

The limited-time offer is available through June 11.

Sprint also said it is now offering a $10 monthly credit on the LG G Pad tablet, which when connected with the carrier’s device payment option results in a free tablet. Sprint last year began offering monthly payment options on tablet devices, beginning with the Apple iPad Air 2 and Mini 3.

The latest move looks to link consumer appetite for tablets with carrier security of a device payment commitment tied to smartphones, which have a higher monthly service charge compared with other devices. This could potentially lead to reduced churn levels with just a small financial investment from Sprint.

Tablets have become a significant growth contributor for some operators following the rollout of shared data plans that allow customers to add “connected” devices to those plans for a nominal monthly fee. Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility recently announced tablets were the main driver of postpaid growth for their respective first quarters, with Sprint expected to announce similar metrics when it posts Q1 results next week.
