Internet portal Yahoo! Inc. acquired startup Wuf Networks for an undisclosed sum, the company said.
The acquisition is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Wuf was founded last year and has no products commercially available. Yahoo! offered little in the way of information on its plans for the company’s technology.
“We acquired them to utilize their expertise and technology and to continue to expand our key Yahoo! services beyond the desktop,” said Yahoo! spokeswoman Nicole Leverich. “Their technology could be used for a variety of different things.”
According to Wuf’s Web site, the company was developing what it called a personal network that would give users access to their content through a variety of networks and devices. The company said its client-server technology would take a human approach to information, and would also include digital rights management. Leverich declined to provide further information, including when Yahoo! might launch Wuf’s technology.
Yahoo! acquired Wuf Nov. 9.
Yahoo! has long offered services over wireless networks, and recently launched a Yahoo! search portal for mobile phone users.
