SANTA MONICA, Calif.-In a sign of the continuing proliferation of Wi-Fi technology, Boingo Wireless and Tropos Networks have entered a partnership to allow operators of Tropos-powered metro-scale Wi-Fi networks to give Boingo Roaming System users access to their networks.
The companies said they have completed interoperability testing of their equipment and software, demonstrating that Tropos-powered metro networks can be easily integrated into the Boingo Roaming System.
“By partnering with Boingo as the industry’s leading aggregator, we are taking a gigantic leap toward making seamless Wi-Fi ubiquity possible worldwide-a huge opportunity and benefit for our service provider customers and mobile users,” said Ron Sege, president and chief executive officer of Tropos.
“The large coverage area and indoor/outdoor nature of metro Wi-Fi services broadens the appeal of wireless Internet access for both today’s laptop devices and tomorrow’s Wi-Fi-based phones and other consumer electronics,” said Dave Hagan, Boingo president and CEO.
Recent ABI research said the Wi-Fi market is benefiting from several forces, including a better economy, handheld devices aimed at niche markets and a variety of new Wi-Fi-ready phones.
