NEW YORK-The mobile entertainment field got a little more crowded Thursday with the launch of ThumbPlay, a venture capital-fueled content provider.
Based in New York, ThumbPlay will offer ringtones, wallpaper, games and dating services. The company’s first promotional effort includes a campaign encouraging fans to send text messages before concerts on the current “Jay-Z and Friends” tour.
The messages, which cost $1 to send, will appear on screens throughout the venue before the artists take the stage. Swagger Wireless has partnered for the promotion.
“We wanted to create a promotion that offered something new for the fans, offering a means of interacting with each other in a playful way,” said Are Traasdahl, ThumbPlay’s founder and president. “The response from the audience has been unbelievable; another sign that the U.S. wireless entertainment market continues to demonstrate steady growth patterns.”
ThumbPlay is funded by i-Hatch Ventures and Redwood Partners.
