China Airlines to offer wireless Internet service on N.A. flights

TAIPEI, Taiwan-Connexion by Boeing will provide in-flight Internet service to passengers aboard China Airlines’ North American flights next year, the companies announced Wednesday.

Boeing will begin installing the system aboard long-haul 747-400 aircraft in the second quarter of 2005, and service will begin “shortly thereafter,” according to a statement. The offering will initially be offered on flights to and from New York; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Anchorage, Alaska; and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. CAL is the sixth carrier to agree to offer Connexion by Boeing service.

“The Internet plays an increasingly valuable role in the everyday lives of our passengers who want to conduct business and stay in touch with friends and family, and we are proud to be the first Taiwanese airline to offer them high-speed, mobile connectivity in flight,” said CAL Chairman Chiang Yao-Chung.<
