Cricket battle with MetroPCS continues, adds data access in Mexico and Canada

AT&T Mobility’s Cricket prepaid brand allows some customers access to data when roaming

AT&T Mobility’s Cricket prepaid brand said customers on higher-tiered plans can now access their data services when roaming in Mexico and Canada. Those customers had previously been provided access to their voice-calling and messaging service when traveling in the two countries.

The expanded offer is provided on Cricket Smart and Pro plans, which are priced at $50 and $60 per month, respectively. The Basic plan is excluded from the roaming offer.

Customers on the Smart plan are currently afforded 5 gigabytes per month of unthrottled data service, while Pro customers have access to 10 GB of data. Those plans also allow for unlimited text messaging from the U.S. to 38 international markets.

Cricket’s Mexico expansion looks to build on AT&T’s recent push into the Mexican mobile market, with the company having spent $4.4 billion acquiring Iusacell and Nextel Mexico, and commitments to spend an additional $3 billion to expand “high-speed, mobile Internet service” to 100 million people in Mexico by the end of 2018.

T-Mobile US in July announced its “Mobile without Borders” program that allows branded postpaid and prepaid customers to place calls, send text messages and access data services in Mexico – and Canada – by tapping into their rate plans at no extra cost. The data access includes LTE speeds where available, and customers can also place calls from the U.S. to all numbers in Canada and Mexico for no extra cost on qualifying plans. T-Mobile US has since expanded the service to its MetroPCS prepaid brand.

AT&T recently reported its Cricket-based prepaid efforts posted 466,000 net additions for the third quarter, which was a strong turnaround from the loss of 46,000 prepaid customers last year and showed continued success in integrating the Leap Wireless assets.
