AT&T follows Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, set for a $5 per month price increase starting in February
AT&T Mobility is set to follow the lead of rivals and increase the price of unlimited data services.
According to a report from 9to5Mac, and affirmed by the carrier, AT&T Mobility is set to tack on $5 per month to the price of unlimited data access, pushing the total monthly charge to $35. The move is set to begin in February.
“Our unlimited data plan customers continue to receive an incredible value, especially those taking advantage of our 4G LTE network,” the carrier noted in a statement.
AT&T Mobility stopped offering unlimited data services to customers several years ago, and has since been in hot water with government regulators over throttling of access speeds to a small percentage of those customers.
The AT&T Mobility price increase would be substantially lower than similar moves by rivals Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile US and Sprint. Carriers have said they need to increase prices in order to help pay for network upgrades to handle customers taking advantage of their unlimited data access.
Verizon Wireless recently increased the price of its unlimited data package by $20 per month, bringing the total monthly charge for access to $50. The carrier stopped offering unlimited data access to customers in 2011.
T-Mobile US implemented its own price increase for unlimited data customers, with new subscribers selecting the offer being charged $45 per month. The carrier had previously offered unlimited data for $30 per month.
Sprint recently increased its pricing on unlimited data plans by $10 per month as well as said it would curb data speeds of those customers in some instances.
