LONDON-The contract beat goes on for Nortel Networks Ltd.: one in Europe, another in Russia.
Nortel said carrier MmO2 has expanded its infrastructure contract with the vendor for UMTS gear across the operator’s networks in the United Kingdom, Germany and Ireland.
Nortel had signed a previous contract for GPRS and core networks with MmO2. But this expansion also covers network engineering and radio optimization, according to the wireless supplier, adding Nortel will supply UMTS radio equipment in eastern and southern Germany as well as across most regions of the British Isles.
Nortel also said it has signed a series of contract extensions with BaykalWestcom to upgrade its GSM networks in Eastern Siberia, focusing on the Irkutsk region.
The upgrades will allow the carrier’s existing digital wireless network “to accommodate more network traffic and wireless phone calls while also streamlining networking functions,” according to BaykalWestcom.
Financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
