Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson named as top brands in Europe

LONDON-Handset manufacturers Siemens AG and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications L.P. could make inroads against Nokia Corp. in Europe, according to the Yankee Group 2004 European Mobile User Survey.

Respondents numbering in the thousands overwhelmingly named Nokia as the most widely owned brand in Europe followed by Siemens and Sony Ericsson. Other brands, including Samsung, Motorola Inc. and Panasonic, were not rated as high by respondents according to the survey.

“Nokia is clearly the most powerful and widely owned wireless handset brand in Europe,” said Declan Lonergan, Wireless/Mobile Europe director at the Yankee Group. “In our survey, 42 percent of respondents owned Nokia handsets, and 59 percent included it in their top three considerations for next upgrade.”

“We were particularly impressed by Sony Ericsson’s performance,” continued Lonergan. “Despite having only an 8-percent market share among our respondents, the brand was named as a top-three upgrade choice by 22 percent of respondents.”

To try to help remedy its low brand appeal in Europe, Motorola announced six new handsets this week in the market. See See Motorola offers 6 clamshell phones in Europe.
