AT&T subs could be without wired service for weeks

The combination of a construction mishap and wet weather could leave AT&T Internet, TV and phone customers in Pompano Beach, Florida, without services for two weeks or more, according to reports.

The Sun Sentinel reports 412 of an initial 591 AT&T customers are still without the bundled services following the Jan. 5 outage caused by a construction crew severing transmission lines.

AT&T spokeswoman Kelly Starling said, “Service for some customers has already been restored and we expect service to be restored for all customers within the next two weeks. … The other company was digging when it cut our cables.”

AT&T did not identify the company that caused the outage.

Starling added the multi-week timeframe is because “the extensive damage to our cables and ducts required us to rebuild our infrastructure before we could start working on rebuilding connectivity. The repair work has also been challenged by wet weather. Despite these challenges, our network team continues to work around the clock to restore service as quickly as possible.”

Starling told the Sun Sentinel customers’ bills would be considered “case-by-case.”

Back in August, AT&T expanded its GigaPower Internet service into the Pompano Beach area following an initial area rollout in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami metropolitan areas. GigaPower offers Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second.
