Latest RootMetrics airport testing shows Verizon top provider ahead of T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint; Southwest Florida best airport, Philly the worst
If you are a Verizon Wireless customer and travel a lot through Southwest Florida International airport, consider yourself the captain of connectivity as both of those entities were top ranked in RootMetrics latest testing of cellular coverage across the nation’s 50 busiest airports.
In terms of strongest carrier connections at those 50 locations through the second half of last year, Verizon Wireless was deemed the best or tied for the best in terms of service across 25 airports. T-Mobile US made a strong showing itself, coming out in the top spot at 16 locations, with AT&T Mobility a close No. 3 with a top grade in 15 locations and Sprint a distant No. 4 with a top ranking at just three airports.
Verizon Wireless maintained its top position from previous testing, though it slipped from posting a top placing across 29 airports in RootMetrics testing for the first half of 2015. T-Mobile US also kept its No. 2 position, but again dipped from a top score across 20 locations, while AT&T Mobility improved slightly on its previous top scores at 13 airports and Sprint improved from the previous test where it did not garner any top spots.
Verizon Wireless is also off to a hot start this year in RootMetrics market-based rankings, with the carrier scoring a top ranking in 40 of 52 markets tested so far through the first three months of 2016. In the race for the runner-up spot, AT&T Mobility maintains a close No. 2 position scoring a top spot or share of the top spot across 24 markets so far tested by RootMetrics. T-Mobile US looks to be rebounding from a poor showing last year, scoring a top spot or share for the top spot in 12 markets, with Sprint currently in a leadership position across just a pair of markets.
Verizon Wireless came out on top of RootMetrics last complete nationwide ranking, garnering a score of 94.5 across all 125 markets the firm tested for the second half of 2015. AT&T Mobility came in at No. 2 in those tests with a 91.3 score, followed by Sprint with a score of 86 and T-Mobile US with a score of 80.9. Verizon Wireless also topped RootMetrics’ first half of 2015 results, though in those results was No. 2 to AT&T Mobility in text performance.
RootMetrics typically tests mobile network performance both indoors and outdoors across 125 markets, and across five metrics: network reliability, network speed, data performance, call performance and text performance.
In terms of airport locations with the best overall combined performance from all carriers, Sacramento International was ranked just behind Southwest Florida International, followed by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Dallas Love Field and Boston’s Logan International airport. Atlanta was the top ranked airport in the last RootMetrics report.
Philadelphia International was deemed the worst performing airport in terms of cellular connectivity, followed by San Diego International, Los Angeles International, Nashville International and Austin-Bergstrom International.
