Forecast for carrier SDN predicts 98% CAGR between 2015 and 2020
The carrier software-defined networking market is expected to generate $8.7 billion in revenues by 2020, compared to $280 million in 2016, due to the acceleration of commercial deployments, according to a report by IHS. The carrier SDN market, including hardware, software and services, is forecast to expand at a 98% compound annual growth rate between 2015 and 2020, the firm predicts.
The research firm said carriers are currently evaluating use cases as well as conducting proof-of-concept projects and field trials for SDN and network functions virtualization technologies. The market is seeing a small, but growing number of commercial deployments, with IHS noting the market was at an early stage in a long-term transformation of service provider networks.
“For the past several years, the telecom industry has been moving toward a major network and operational transformation epitomized by software-defined networking and network functions virtualization with the top goals of automation and service agility,” the report says.
SDN deployments started in Japan with NEC and NTT DoCoMo, and the country has been active in deploying real, but small commercial use cases. China is also active in this field, with many sizable commercial deployments in 2015 and 2016. Service providers in North America and Europe are also in the process of deploying SDN, and are anticipated to account for 13% of total SDN revenues.
According to the report, software and outsourced services will comprise 46% of SDN revenue in 2020. Meanwhile, SDN orchestration and controller software revenue is forecast to grow to over $1.8 billion in 2020.
