Australian telecom operator seeks to expand its presence in the internet of things (IoT) market through the acquisition of compatriot firm MTData, a provider of GPS and telematics fleet management solutions.
The new acquisition will provide Telstra with the technical capability and software expertise necessary to accelerate its enterprise connected vehicle offering, the telco said.
“The MTData acquisition provides Telstra with advanced technology and deep domain expertise in connected vehicle solutions. This is in line with our internet of things growth strategy and leverages from investment in the IoT footprint on our mobile network, which is the largest in Australia and one of the largest in the world,” said Michelle Bendschneider, executive director at Telstra Enterprise.
“This strategic acquisition will enable us to capitalise on the business ready IoT capability on our network, deliver IoT solutions to our customers in the heavy vehicle industry and supports a natural transition towards future autonomous vehicle technologies.”
“Telstra is the right partner for MTData. There are strong synergies with our technology and customer focused cultures and through our integration we will provide customers with access to new and existing technologies like Telstra’s IoT offerings,” MTData’s CEO and co-founder Matthew Bellizia, said.
Telstra has been focusing in several business areas including connected vehicles, asset tracking and location insights in the utilities, agriculture and resources industries.
Tech Data announces deal with Vodafone to offer IoT connectivity services in Europe
In other IoT news, Tech Data announced a pan-European agreement to offer managed internet of things (IoT) connectivity services from Vodafone.
Through this agreement, resellers and systems integrators across Europe can access Vodafone’s IoT services, Tech Data said.
Tech Data’s offering includes IoT SIM-enabled devices, hardware and software that, in combination with Vodafone’s managed IoT connectivity services, will allow reseller partners to provide complete IoT solutions to their customers. This will enable the provision of remote monitoring and control for industrial operational applications, mobile asset tracking, fleet management, building security and network access.
Tech Data will conduct a phased roll out of this offering, starting in the U.K in the coming quarter and following up across the rest Europe during 2018.
