Telefonica boosts enterprise offer with Nokia virtualized router

Telefonica Business Solutions deployed Nokia Virtualized Service Router in a provider edge application looking to boost performance, trim costs

Telefonica bolstered its move into the virtualized network space through a partnership with Nokia to deploy the vendor’s virtualized router technology in a live network to support the carrier’s enterprise offerings.

The deployment involved Telefonica Business Solutions inserting Nokia’s Virtualized Service Router in a provider edge application in a move designed to increase network reach, accelerate deployments of its enterprise virtual private network services and tap into new points of presence. The deployment is also said to help the cost structure in targeting lower customer densities and reduce operational expenses.

“We have deployed and integrated one virtual [private edge] in the international backbone of Telefonica,” said Pedro López, business solutions B2B customer operations director at Telefonica, in a statement. “This is one of the most critical projects in the core of the network that will help us to offer enhanced network services.”

In touting its platform, Nokia said its virtualized portfolio has been analyzed by the European Advanced Networking Test Center, which indicated a leadership position for the vendor in the area of network functions virtualization.

Nokia was recently cited in a Current Analysis report as being “very strong” in terms of its position in the NFV and network orchestration space. Nokia’s recent acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent allowed the vendor to bolster its MANO offering, with the report citing clear NFV MANO intentions from the vendor and support for deployments through its CloudBand ecosystem. On the flip side, Nokia is said to be challenged by live NFVO operation and interfacing to existing carrier OSS.
