Sales of infrastructure equipment covering all the major technologies surged 37 percent to $9 billion in the second quarter, according to a report from Dell’Oro group.
Although the study covered GSM/GPRS/EDGE, TDMA and W-CDMA technology, GSM/GPRS/EDGE network sales accounted for 60 percent of the net increase in contrast to the same period last year.
“With this strong growth, the market for GSM-based infrastructure is far from dead,” said Greg Collins, senior director of mobile infrastructure at Dell’Oro Group.
“While many developed regions are deploying W-CDMA networks and launching services, service providers are also investing in EDGE as a way to provide higher-speed data services across their coverage areas.”
