Korean telecom giant SK Telecom Co. (SKM) unveiled a new strategic direction for the new year that the company said will help spur growth both domestically and in international markets, and includes the roll out of LTE services in its home market later this year.
The new direction, which SK has dubbed “Speed, Openness and Collaboration,” is targeted at making the company a “more agile and speedier organization in order to strengthen its market leadership as well as capture more opportunities in new sectors though open collaboration with partners.”
“The power of SK Telecom comes from its young, agile organization,” explained Ha Sung-Min, president and CEO of SK Telecom. “Armed with a speedier organization, we will further solidify our market leadership in the fixed-mobile convergence, enhance our networks for increased data traffic, as well as release differentiated data services and expand our smart phone line up.”
As part of those plans, SK plans to launch commercial LTE services in Seoul during the third quarter of this year as well as make “heavy investments in high-speed Wi-Fi and data femtocell.”
SK Telecom was one of the first operators in the world to launch WiMAX services in 2006 and has a history with both CDMA and W-CDMA networks.
