One of the funniest press releases to come out of last week’s CTIA I.T. & Entertainment event was from Alcatel-Lucent. “Alcatel-Lucent launches presence on Second Life virtual reality site to explore the potential uses of next-generation technologies, including 4G mobile broadband networks,” the release read. Maybe it’s because we are not the biggest fans of the faux-world Second Life, but the thought of going to a fake world to discuss the potential of mobile broadband speeds seems especially dull. But hey, if there are boring things to do in the real world, might as well offer them in the virtual one as well.

With a bit of hindsight and some much needed sleep, some of us in attendance at last week’s CTIA I.T. & Entertainment 2007 show have come to the conclusion that the biggest news from the event was the lack of big news from the event. Sure there were some handsets shown off, and some content deals announced, but nothing that will make the show memorable. For the handset guys it seems that most domestic carriers had already unveiled their holiday portfolios earlier in the month. This timing issue might have something to do with the event this year being held in late October instead of its usual September time frame. CTIA has next year’s event scheduled for early September in San Francisco.

Looks like one million handsets shipped is becoming the new standard for new device launches. Verizon Wireless and LG kinda kicked off the craze in June when they announced they had sold one million Chocolates, then was upped by Apple reporting one million iPhone sales during the first quarter of its release. Motorola last week joined in saying it was nearing the one million sold mark for its Razr2 device. We have already become a bit bored with the number and are now waiting for handset models to hit the one gazillion sold mark.

Motricity announced last week that it will offer over-the-air downloads of books onto smartphones. Finally! We were getting so sick of reading books with large type under good lighting.
