The Open Mobile Alliance wireless standards group announced the release of several new specifications covering Web services, location-based services and other hot-button technologies. Founded two years ago, OMA works to set global specifications for various wireless data services and functions.
In conjunction with the CommunicAsia trade show, OMA issued phase-one candidate enabler releases, including Web Services 1.0, Mobile Locations Protocol 3.1 and Online Certificate Status Protocol 1.0. The group also added new features to its Digital Rights Management 2.0, Browsing 2.0 and Data Synchronization 1.2. Finally, the group announced its Device Management 1.1.2 has passed interoperability testing to become a phase-two approved enabler release.
The OMA approves new technologies in three phases. Phase one covers open technical specifications that can be implemented in products and solutions and tested for interoperability. Phase two represents specifications that have passed OMA interoperability testing, and that companies can implement to create interoperable products. Phase three includes multiple specifications that have passed Phase two with end-to-end interoperability test reports and information about use cases.
“OMA helps its member companies bring new services to market faster and more cost effectively,” said Jari Alvinen, chairman of the OMA board. “Already, our member companies have launched hundreds of products implementing the OMA specifications. We expect OMA specifications featured in a significant number of new products and services to be unveiled by member companies in the near future.”
