Greece's Cosmote launches 3G, i-mode services

TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. said it scored its ninth i-mode carrier partner as Greek operator Cosmote Mobile Telecommunications SA announced it will launch the wireless Internet service on its GPRS network. The announcement coincides with the launch of Cosmote’s third-generation network, which the carrier said will be available in time for the summer Olympics in Athens.

Cosmote joins carriers in Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Belgium, France, Spain and Italy in launching wireless Internet services based on DoCoMo’s successful i-mode wireless data service. Cosmote said it will offer its i-mode services through several NEC Corp. handsets, as well as a Panasonic handset.

Separately, the carrier said it will offer video streaming and video calling features on its new 3G network. Cosmote said the service will initially be available on the Nokia 7600 and the Sony Ericsson Z1010.
