China Unicom begins WAP 2.0 service via Alcatel system

PARIS-China Unicom announced it will offer an upgraded WAP service through a new deal with infrastructure provider Alcatel. The carrier will use Alcatel’s WAP 2.0 offering, which allows users to view wireless Web sites written in XHTML.

“With the development of this WAP 2.0 solution, we expect to provide more powerful and extensive mobile Internet access services,” said Meng Xiangsen, vice general manager of the carrier’s value-added services division. “Thanks to Alcatel’s WAP 2.0 solution, we can now meet ever-growing demand and generate more revenue. This is only our first step. We forecast there will be 10 million WAP users in China by the end of this year.”

A variety of carriers, including AT&T Wireless Services Inc., offer WAP 2.0 services.
