Matsushita to move phone manufacturing

OSAKA, Japan-Japanese electronics manufacturer Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., which makes Panasonic-brand mobile phones, announced it will build a manufacturing center specifically for mobile phones in part of an effort to streamline its production systems.

Matsushita said it will move its Japanese mobile-phone manufacturing efforts from its Hanamaki plant in Iwate Prefecture into the Shizuoka Prefecture, and its automotive electronics manufacturing will be moved to Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture. The company said the new mobile-phone manufacturing plant in Shizuoka will be repositioned as a “high value-added production base for the latest-generation mobile phones,” such as third-generation FOMA phones for NTT DoCoMo Inc. Matsushita also said the Shizuoka plant will respond to global demands from buyers in China, the Philippines, Czech and other countries.
