Amazon kindles a fire with developers

Appcelerator and IDC’s latest survey of more than 2,000 application developers found that the Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Kindle Fire, which ships today, is the No. 1 Android device in North America when it comes to programmer interest. But overall, developers are still more focused on Apple’s iPhone and iPad as platforms for their applications.

Forty-nine percent of those surveyed said they are “very interested” in developing for the Kindle Fire, followed by the Samsung Galaxy Tab at 48%; 37% said they are very interested in developing for the Motorola Xoom, and just 24% for the Barnes & Noble Nook. Globally, the Samsung Galaxy Tab generated the most developer interest among Android tablets, followed by the Kindle Fire, the Motorola Xoom and the HTC Flyer.

Overall, developer interest in Android tablets and phones declined slightly from June to November, according to the survey. Apple’s iOS operating system still has the highest level of developer commitment, with 91% of those surveyed saying they want to develop for the iPhone, followed by the iPad at 88%. The only operating system that saw an increase in developer interest was Windows 7, with 38% of those surveyed reporting interest, up from just 30% in June.

Developers are losing interest in connected TV, with just 20% interested in creating apps for Google TV and just 27% for Apple TV. A year ago, Google TV had 44% of developers interested and Apple 44%.

It should be noted that only developers using Appcelerator’s Titanium platform participated in this survey.
