China Mobile expands SDN support with Nuage Networks VSP

China Mobile selects Nuage Networks VSP to provide public, private and hybrid cloud services

China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) recently announced that it has chosen Nokia’s Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) as the software-defined networking (SDN) platform for its public and private enterprise cloud services offering.

Nuage Networks noted the platform China Mobile will use includes cloud implementations on virtual machines, Kubernetes (K8S) containers and OpenStack Ironic-based bare metal servers.

“Having a single virtual networking platform enables China Mobile to easily offer a variety of services to their customers without any additional integration effort,” Hussein Khazaal, VP of marketing and partnerships, Nuage Networks, told RCR Wireless News. “In fact, the high degree of automation offered by the platform, allows China Mobile to be more efficient in the services they offer than ever before.”

This isn’t the first time that Nuage Networks VSP has been used to deliver China Mobile’s cloud services, however. In the past two years, Nokia’s joint venture in China, Nokia Shanghai Bell, has helped deploy Nuage Networks VSP to deliver China Mobile’s public and private cloud services in 10 data centers, with the the largest deployment containing over 1,000 servers. This helped Nokia Shanghai Bell seal the title as the leading SDN vendor powering CMCC existing cloud solutions, according to the company.

“This decision is based on first-hand experience operating this platform in their network and their trust in our ability to meet their growing demands at large scale,” said Khazaa. “China mobile has already deployed VSP before to offer public and private cloud services to enterprises at a large scale.”

As part of the deal, China Mobile will leverage Nuage’s VSP to help expand its SDN support for new public, private and hybrid cloud services for its enterprise customers, such as hosting workloads on either Kubernetes (K8S) containers or bare metal servers. Additionally, a centralized policy manager and SDN controller automates the configuration, management and optimization of virtual networks, including security services that provide tenant isolation and access controls to individual applications and workloads, according to the company.

“Having a strong relationship with CMCC based on the work we’ve already done with them, we were especially pleased to be chosen to continue with this important project,” said Sunil Khandekar, CEO for Nokia’s Nuage Networks, in a statement. “The Nuage Networks solution allows CMCC to offer some very dynamic, high performing and attractive cloud services for their customers.”
