Wireless sensor market to reach $7M by end of decade

SAN DIEGO-More than 500 million nodes will ship for wireless sensor applications in 2010 for an end-user market worth $7 million, according to a report by ON World.

Wireless sensors have been around for decades, said ON World, but the technology has remained in its infancy until recently due to expensive, primitive radios and bulky, complicated sensors. With advanced radio-frequency integrated circuits now available at less than $3 in high volumes, and with smart sensor integrated circuits becoming widespread, the wireless sensor market is poised to take off, said the firm.

ON World said wireless sensors are particularly beneficial in industrial and commercial building settings where they can reduce wiring costs by up to 80 percent. By 2010, the firm predicts wireless sensors will also be widespread in consumer markets, such as monitoring and controlling heating, lighting, venting and appliances, and future applications could include tracking of belongings, pets and children, said the firm.
