Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) isn’t making a big deal about it yet, but it has confirmed that the operating system it acquired through QNX Software Systems will eventually replace the traditional BlackBerry OS on all future devices.
The new OS will make its debut for the BlackBerry maker on its new tablet. According to IntoMobile, an unnamed RIM executive confirmed that the new OS will eventually lead the way for BlackBerry devices going forward, but no details were provided about how long such a transition might take.
RIM just released BlackBerry 6 and the executive said BlackBerry 7 would likely be a stepping stone to the most significant OS refresh ever taken on by the company.
With an increasingly fragmented OS offering though, RIM could lose some developer interest if it doesn’t embrace a single modern, highly scalable OS sooner than later.
