US energy company Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) has deployed a total of four million smart gas modules and electricity meters across its service territory in New York as a part of its advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) project with Itron. The duration of the project, and the four million meter deployments, is unclear.
The utility has also deployed 25,000 methane detectors developed, which have detected and mitigated over 300 valid “gas events”, the Liberty Lake IoT provider firm said in a press statement. Con Edison is using Itron’s industrial IoT platform to improve outage detection and restoration, and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by optimising voltage levels in the electricity grid in the New York area.
The utility is able to read its entire install base of electric meters every 15 minutes, said Itron, resulting in over 375 million meter reads per day. Con Edison is also improving safety in its delivery of natural gas with Itron’s battery-powered New Cosmos natural gas detectors. A statement said: “Taking advantage of Itron’s comprehensive set of managed hosting, operational and analytics services, Con Edison is equipped to maximize its operations and enhance customer service.”
