Nortel snares WiMAX deal

Internet service provider Moline Dispatch Publishing Co. said it plans to launch a WiMAX network covering western Illinois and eastern Iowa using equipment from Nortel Networks Ltd.
The service, to be offered through MDPC’s Quad-Cities Online subsidiary, will use 2.5 GHz spectrum available through a long-term lease of EBS channels from Black Hawk College, and will include both fixed and mobile wireless broadband services.
Financial terms of the deal were not released, though Nortel said there was no vendor financing involved.
Nortel, which so far has been snubbed by Sprint Nextel Corp. for its high-profile nationwide WiMAX plans, has made headway in the WiMAX space through a number of deals with domestic and international companies.
