SAN DIEGO-BREW pioneer Qualcomm Inc. said it will recommend that its carrier customers use IBM Corp.’s Linux servers to run its application download system. Qualcomm said its BREW service runs most quickly on IBM’s Linux equipment.
Qualcomm’s IBM deal “is not an exclusive relationship,” said Gina Lombardi, senior vice president of marketing and product management for Qualcomm’s Internet Services division, which heads the BREW effort. “We support all the platforms that the operators want.”
Lombardi said Qualcomm is recommending IBM’s Linux equipment, but said its BREW system will work over any network infrastructure technology. In using IBM’s equipment, carriers would install Linux servers into their network to manage the billing and downloading process for BREW applications. Linux is one of several common computing technologies deployed inside wireless carriers’ networks.
