France Telecom to cut nearly 15,000 jobs

PARIS-France Telecom plans to cut its workforce by almost 15,000 people this year in a broad reorganization under Chief Executive Thierry Breton, according to international press reports.

The cuts will come mainly through early retirement and reassignment to other branches of the government civil service. About 8,800 jobs will be cut in France.

France Telecom has been plagued with a high debt load, and the staff reductions are part of its goal to further cut costs.
