The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
- Cellular
- Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia and Liechthenstein: L.M. Ericsson said it has been chosen by members of the Mobilkom Austria Group to expand and upgrade their W-CDMA radio networks with HSPA functionality in the four countries.
- Bangladesh: Alcatel-Lucent said it has completed a live field trial of EDGE technology in the country using TM International Ltd.’s commercial GSM 900 MHz and 1800 MHz network.
- Indonesia: PT. Mobile-8 Telecom Tbk., a CDMA carrier that operates under the Fren brand, selected Samsung to develop infrastructure for the company’s planned nationwide rollout. Samsung is expected to provide CDMA 2000 1x and CDMA 200 EVDO Rev. A networks as part of the deal.
- Romania: Fixed mobile operator RCS & RDS selected Nokia Corp. to provide W-CDMA 3G core and radio network equipment.
- Slovania: Tusmobil selected Nokia Corp. to provide GSM/EDGE core and radio network equipment. The agreement also calls for Nokia to operate the network for Tusmobil.
WiMAX - Brazil: Pay TV company TVA said it is building a trial WiMAX network in the country using technology and equipment provided by Nortel Networks.
Wi-Fi - France: Alcatel-Lucent and SFR said they won a contract to deploy a citywide Wi-Fi network covering Paris.
Miscellaneous - United States: Cisco Systems said the city of El Paso, Texas, has awarded it a contract to provide an outdoor wireless mesh network that will provide Internet access to citizens and businesses. Also in the United States, 4G Metro said it signed a contract with Trinity Railway Express to provide a wireless broadband solution covering the entire length of TRE’s 36-mile public railway route. The deal will give TRE’s passengers access to high-speed wireless Internet service and entertainment services while on board. 4G Networks has contracted with Nortel Networks and Colubris Networks for equipment to build the TRE network.
