LAS VEGAS-RealNetworks Inc. said it will include support for PalmOne Inc.’s Treo 600 smart phone in its newly unveiled Internet music download service. The move marks likely the first such music download service to target wireless devices.
RealNetworks’ Music Store will sell MP3 digital music for about $1 per song and $10 per album, and Treo 600 users will be able to download the songs and play them on their devices. Users will be able to plug their devices into their desktop computers and transfer the songs to the devices. RealNetworks said its Music Store will also support PalmOne personal digital assistants, including the Tungsten T3, Tungsten T2, Tungsten T, Tungsten C, Tungsten E and Zire 71 handhelds.
Following the success of Apple Computer Corp.’s iPod MP3 player and iTunes music download service, several other digital music vendors have begun selling MP3s. Most services target portable MP3 players, although a variety of mobile-phone makers including Nokia Corp. have included MP3 support in their devices.
