Huawei, Vodafone complete smart parking trial in Spain

Huawei said smart parking solutions would generate revenue opportunities for municipal governments

Chinese vendor Huawei and U.K-based telecoms group Vodafone completed the first trial on commercial networks for pre-standard NB-IoT smart parking in Spain.

Following a smart metering trial in Spain last November, the two companies began working on a second pre-commercial NB-IoT trial on smart parking.

The smart parking trial, which was carried out in collaboration with Fangle and Ublox, covered various indoor parking spots. Huawei said that smart parking will allow users to access parking data remotely, from mobile application, including checking parking spot availability and navigating to the available spots, among other features.

The Chinese vendor also said that the solution will create new revenue streams for municipal management, lower public parking running costs, as well as helping to alleviate traffic congestion.

“With the NB-IoT Open Lab in the U.K established, Huawei is committed to working closely with Vodafone to expand the NB-IoT ecosystem and develop more innovative solutions, such as Smart Metering and now Smart Parking, to fully support the industry and partners to embrace the opportunities NB-IoT will bring,” David Wang, President of Wireless Product Line at Huawei said.

Both Huawei and Vodafone said they are working to achieve the standardization in June as well as the pre-commercial phase by the end of the year.

Telenor India deploys 10,000 Huawei mobile base stations

In related news, Indian mobile operator Telenor completed the deployment of more than 10,000 new Huawei Blade Site wireless base-stations in India.

The telecoms operator said that the deployment started in November 2015 and was completed in April this year. Huawei’s solutions were installed across Telenor’s six telecoms circles.

The new network can support 4G LTE technology for the provision of high-speed mobile broadband, the telco said.

“By deploying Huawei Blade Site solution we have not only accelerated the speed of installation of a new network but also increased coverage and improved network quality experience within the available resources,” Telenor India’s COO Tanveer Mohammad said. “The swapped sites have shown higher spectral and power efficiencies that have helped us reduce our operational expense.”

The Huawei Blade Site solution supports flexible combinations of Baseband Unit (BBU), Radio Frequency (RF) and power modules, provides Global System for Mobile (GSM), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and LTE three-mode concurrent operations.

Telenor India currently has 52.4 million subscribers in the Indian market.
